True Love and True Strength (dedicated to my grandma, Cheryl Kaye Smith)

Tears fall

From so many tired eyes

Ten of us are surrounding her

As she moves on

From this life to the next

I close my eyes

And remember her smile

And remember her laugh

And remember the way she used to say

“You make me so proud, Paige”

Ten of us surrounding her

As she falls into

Her eternal sleep of peace

I close my eyes

As I hold her soft hand

So fragile in mine

Our gold rings touch

And I think to myself, soon she will be free

I imagine angels carrying her

Up to the gates of Heaven

Singing peaceful lullabies

And all of her pain and suffering

Is washed away

I open my eyes

And see that it’s almost her time

And so she goes, she goes,

Into His loving arms she goes,

And though tears fall down from our eyes

And though we can’t believe she’s truly gone

We all know she’s now with the angels

And they’re singing, they’re all singing,

True love, and true strength,

Is watching someone you love die

And move on to a better place,

A better time…

This Is What It Feels Like To Have You

I guess all I really want

Is for us to stay the same

Now I’m not saying we shouldn’t change

Cuz just like the world is gonna keep on turnin

And just like the sun and moon are always gonna fall and rise

You and I are always gonna change, no we’ll never stay the same

But the love we share, and the way we care,

That is what I want to always stay the same

No, I never want that the change

Because having you by my side

Knowing that we want the same thing

Is what it feels like to have you

And I want to have you forever and a day

I just wish things could’ve stayed the same

As the first day we met

The first day we held hands

The first day you told me that you loved me

I guess all I really want

Is for us to stay the same

And just like the rain comes and goes

You gotta run

Get out, get out

Killer outside your window

Killer outside your door

Come to kidnap you in the night

Put a gun into your hand

Make you become a killer, too

We’re living in a dangerous time

In a world with too much hate

With mad men who like to kill mercilessly

And people releasing their inner monsters

So you gotta run for your lives

You gotta run, run to us

We’ll save you all and bring justice to him

Invisible Children, we will save you

Joseph Kony, we will make you famous, then arrest you

And your madness will be stopped once and for all

This Place and This Feeling

I remember

When I was younger

I would look out of the car window

And stare out into the hills

Imagine a pack of wild wolves running free

And pretend that I was with them

Instead of being stuck in a car

I remember

Traveling through the forest

Being able to see faces on the trees

And hear laughter in the wind

Catch the smiles in the sky

And listen to the whispers on the ground

I want to be submerged in nature again

I want to pretend I’m something else

Something bigger than myself

Take me to this place

Take me to this feeling

Take me to this place and feeling

I remember so vividly…
